Dharwad: A departmental inquiry has been initiated against two police personnel following the alleged honour killing of a 20-year-old pregnant woman at Inam Veerapura village in Dharwad district on Sunday night.
According to sources, the two policemen, including Sangameshi Sagar of Special Branch and the local beat constable Chandrakanth Rathod are placed under suspension as part of the ongoing probe. A departmental inquiry has also been initiated to ascertain any lapses on their part.
Meanwhile, police have arrested two more accused in the murder case. The arrested have been identified as Basappa Solargoppa and Anil Gowda Patil.
In the wake of the incident, Dharwad district Deputy Commissioner Divya Prabhu visited Inam Veerapura village and conducted a comprehensive inspection. She was accompanied by MLA M R Patil and Dharwad Superintendent of Police Gunjan Arya.
The Deputy Commissioner interacted with villagers and gathered details about the background of the incident, the prevailing social situation and the condition of the affected family. She directed officials to take precautionary and awareness measures at the village level to prevent the recurrence of such violent incidents.
Superintendent of Police Gunjan Arya said the police had acted swiftly and that the investigation was being pursued with seriousness.
Terming the incident deeply distressing, MLA M R Patil said it was particularly painful as it had occurred in a village within his constituency. He assured that strict action would be taken to ensure such crimes do not recur.
Manya, a 20-year-old pregnant woman, was murdered and her in-laws were injured after they were attacked by a group of men, allegedly led by her father and close relatives, on Sunday evening. The incident is being viewed as an honour killing, allegedly triggered by resentment over her inter-caste marriage.
According to police, Manya was attacked by a group led by her father, Prakash. The FIR names 14 persons in connection with the case. Her mother-in-law Renuka, father-in-law Mariyappa and sister-in-law Hoovamma sustained injuries in the assault and were treated at a hospital.
