Mangaluru: The Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the allegations of secret burials in Dharmasthala on Tuesday conducted a mahazar at the residence of activist Mahesh Shetty Timarodi and his brother.

The whistleblower, who was arrested last week on charges of perjury and is in SIT custody till September 3, was taken along during the spot inspection. Sources said the move was part of the wider inquiry into various aspects of the case, as the whistleblower had reportedly stayed at Timarodi’s house for a few days.

Meanwhile, Sujatha Bhat, who had in the past alleged that her daughter Ananya Bhat, a medical student, went missing from Dharmasthala in 2003, was also summoned by the SIT. She was questioned on Tuesday, sources added.

The SIT was constituted by the state government following allegations by a sanitation worker about secret burials. Investigators have so far conducted searches at 17 sites. Human remains were recovered only at two locations — Spot No. 6 and beneath a tree near Spot No. 11.
