Crackdown on Quacks in Karnataka's Raichur; 18 Booked, 13 Clinics Sealed

District Health and Family Welfare Officer Dr Surendra Babu said action was initiated against 31 individuals who were allegedly posing as qualified doctors and treating unsuspecting patients with unknown medicines

Raichur: A coordinated district-wide drive against unqualified medical practitioners has led to cases being registered against 18 alleged fake doctors and the sealing of 13 clinics in Raichur district.

District Health and Family Welfare Officer Dr Surendra Babu said action was initiated against 31 individuals who were allegedly posing as qualified doctors and treating unsuspecting patients with unknown medicines.

In a simultaneous operation across multiple locations on April 1, officials raided unauthorised clinics run allegedly by unqualified practitioners and private establishments not registered under the Karnataka Private Medical Establishments (KPME) Act.

During the raids, several individuals were found running clinics without valid medical qualifications. Medicines, equipment and records used by them were seized and the premises were sealed.

Following verification of documents, FIRs were registered against 18 alleged fake doctors, while 13 clinics were shut and issued notices.

The drive was carried out following directions from the Principal Secretary of the Health and Family Welfare Department and under the guidance of Deputy Commissioner Nitish K and Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer Ishwar Kumar Khandu.

Teams comprising officials from the revenue, health, police and AYUSH departments were formed at both district and taluk levels for the operation.

Officials said the crackdown would continue to curb illegal medical practice in the district.

The department has urged the public to verify the credentials of medical practitioners before seeking treatment and report suspected quacks to the nearest health centre. Property owners have also been advised to exercise caution before renting out premises for clinic purposes.
