Convict Got Released From Prison Over "Forged" Supreme Court Documents

A convict prisoner for life imprisonment A Shankar allegedly got his release from Central Prison, Bengaluru over forged documents of Supreme Court in November 2018

BENGALURU: A life convict, A Shankar, allegedly secured his release from Central Prison, Bengaluru, in November 2018 using forged Supreme Court documents. Prison officials recently discovered the fraud during verification and have formed a special team to arrest Shankar along with those who aided in the forgery.

Shankar had been sentenced to life imprisonment by Fast Track Court‑1, Bengaluru, in November 2018. On November 13 that year, prison authorities received what appeared to be a Supreme Court order directing his release. He paid a fine of ₹10,000 and walked free.

Nearly eight years later, Director General of Prisons and Correctional Services Alok Kumar received complaints questioning Shankar’s release. An inquiry was ordered, and when the assistant registrar of the Supreme Court was contacted, it was confirmed that the documents were forged.

The Supreme Court official asked prison authorities to initiate action against Shankar and those who assisted in his illegal release. On May 20, the prison superintendent filed a First Information Report at Parappana Agrahara police station, booking Shankar and others under various sections of the IPC.
