Mangaluru: The Indian Coast Guard evacuated a fisherman who sustained injuries after falling overboard from a fishing boat about 54 nautical miles (100 km) off Mangaluru.
The fisherman, Komara Ramu, was aboard the Indian fishing boat (IFB) Shiv Sagar, which had sailed from Mangaluru fishing harbor (Bunder) three days earlier. He fell into the sea while the crew was hauling fishing nets and was subsequently recovered by the fishing boat's crew.
The Coast Guard received a distress call over VHF radio from Shiv Sagar seeking urgent medical evacuation. Coast Guard District Headquarters-3 deployed ICGS C-448, which located the fishing boat in the darkness.
The operation was carried out under challenging conditions during the night.
Ramu was evacuated and provided first aid. He was then brought to the New Mangaluru Port Authority (NMPA) jetty and shifted to a nearby hospital for further treatment.
