BENGALURU: Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Saturday stated tax evasion is highest in Bengaluru city and felt the need to bring in reforms in the functioning of the Commercial Taxes. However, he said, he did not like to interfere ‘unnecessarily’ in the functioning of the Commercial Taxes department despite him being the Finance Minister.

“The taxes collection has been considerably good,” said the Chief Minister at a function to mark golden jubilee of Karnataka Commercial Taxes Service Association organized in Bengaluru and Siddaramaiah wanted commercial taxes officials to strive to take Karnataka to number 1 position in Goods and Services Tax (GST) collection in the country. Currently, he said, Karnataka ranks second in GST collection in the country.
Lauding the role of commercial taxes officials, the Chief Minister said a target of Rs 1, 03, 000 crore was set and the Commercial Taxes officials exceeded the target by collecting Rs 17,000 crore more than the target set.
For the current year, the Chief Minister said, a target of tax collection of Rs 1, 20, 000 has been given and asked the Commercial Taxes officials to meet the set target. The State Budget estimate is of Rs 409000 crore and the implementation of 5-guarantee schemes a sum of Rs 50, 018 crore has been earmarked. Till now, the Chief Minister said, the State Government spent Rs 90,000 crore.
Siddaramaiah said, Opposition parties in Karnataka criticized the ruling Congress led State Government that the 5-guarantee schemes drove the State to ‘bankruptcy.’ However, the role of Commercial Taxes to meet the set target has been laudable.
He said the State Government is committed to fulfill legitimate demands of the State Government employees but at the same time, it acted against officials concerned for dereliction of duties.
