Case Filed Against Puttur MLA Ashok Kumar Rai In Connection With Illegal Cockfighting Event

Manglauru: Vittal police have registered a case against the MLA of the Puttur Assembly constituency Ashok Kumar Rai for allegedly instigating an illegal cockfighting event at Kepu village in Bantwal taluk on Saturday afternoon.
The police have also booked a case against the land owner and 16 who participated in the event.
According to the police, acting on a tip-off, the Inspector of Vittal Police Station, along with staff, reached the paddy field belonging to Muralidhar Rai at Kepu village, where preparations were allegedly underway for an illegal cockfight. Several people were found gathered at the spot holding roosters meant for the fight.
In a press statement the police said the gathered crowd was initially warned and briefed about the legal consequences of cockfighting. However, despite this, the MLA Ashok Kumar Rai, who was present at the spot, allegedly instigated and abetted the gathering to continue with the illegal activity, following which cockfighting reportedly commenced.
The police then took control of the situation by deploying adequate security and detained 16 persons involved in the illegal act. As many as 22 roosters and blades used for cockfighting were seized from the spot.
Police further stated that the landowner, Muralidhar Rai, had allegedly permitted the use of his property for the illegal activity without obtaining any valid permission.
A case has been registered at Vittal Police Station against the MLA, the landowner and the 16 accused under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, and the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960.
