Bengaluru Borewells Get IoT Devices Installed For Data Gathering On Water Usage
BWSSB has installed IoT devices at 1,800 borewells to monitor groundwater levels, water extraction and pump operations in real time.
As part of Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) efforts to borewell management more scientific, efficient and data-driven, the Board has installed Internet of Things (IoT) to as many as 1,800 borewells under its jurisdiction to capture key parameters such as groundwater depth, quantity of water extracted and pump operating hours and transmit the data to a central system in real time.
Currently, BWSSB has nearly 16,000 borewells and in coming days, The Board plans to bring remaining borewells under IoT based monitoring system in phases. BWSSB plans to integrate the existing system with Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) to enable more effective monitoring of borewell performance. The Board Chairman Dr N. Manjula stated to install IoT devices to about 6,000 borewells by next March.
“Continuous data on groundwater levels and usage patterns across different areas will help the Board better understand groundwater conditions and take steps towards more sustainable utilisation,” BWSSB Chairman Dr N. Manjula stated in a release here on Tuesday.
Manjula said “Running pumps when there is insufficient water, operating pump sets for longer than required and identifying faults only after they occur often lead to repeated technical failures. IoT based monitoring will help the Board to identify such issues early and reduce equipment damage as well as avoidable expenditure.”
The IoT system, she said, will help identify borewells where water availability is declining, prevent unnecessary pump operation and reduce instances of motors burning out owing to prolonged maintenance costs and improve operational efficiency.
