Belthangady Court Convicts Man in 2015 Hate Speech Case

Mangaluru: A court in Belthangady has convicted Mohammed Riyaz Farangipete in an 11-year-old hate speech case and sentenced him to six months' simple imprisonment along with a fine of Rs 10,000.
The case dates back to July 23, 2015, when a protest meeting organised by the Popular Front of India (PFI), Belthangady Zone, was held near the Belthangady Taluk Office. Riyaz Farangipete allegedly delivered a provocative speech during the programme that promoted enmity and hurt religious sentiments.
Following the speech, the Belthangady Police registered a case against him under Sections 153A and 295A of the Indian Penal Code.

After trial, Principal Civil Judge and JMFC, Belthangady, Ramalingappa, held that the prosecution had proved the charges against the accused. The court convicted Riyaz Farangipete under Section 153A IPC and sentenced him to six months' simple imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 10,000.
The prosecution was represented by Assistant Public Prosecutor Ashitha.
