BBMP Ignored Alert on Heavy Rainfall, Accuses LoP

He told reporters after inspection of rain-hit areas in Bengaluru city that the State Government assured to install sensors at flood-prone areas in Bengaluru city but nothing happened so far and pointed out to flooding at Silk Board this year as well similar to the previous year

BENGALURU: Leader of Opposition in Assembly and Bharatiya Janata Party (MLA) R. Ashoka on Tuesday alleged officials concerned of Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) were alerted on heavy rainfall by Meteorological Department a month back, yet no precautionary measures were initiated by the officials to avert flooding.

He told reporters after inspection of rain-hit areas in Bengaluru city that the State Government assured to install sensors at flood-prone areas in Bengaluru city but nothing happened so far and pointed out to flooding at Silk Board this year as well similar to the previous year.

“Yet no development funds have been allocated. During the BJP’s tenure, Rs 1,600 crore was provided for storm water drains and road development but Congress party after coming to power stalled these projects. If those works had proceeded, such flooding wouldn’t have not occurred,” said the Leader of Opposition.

Ashoka said the BJP’s tenure allocated about Rs 8,000 crore for Bengaluru city development and the Congress ruled State Government diverted all the funds meant for Bengaluru to build tunnel roads and instead of “Greater Bengaluru has turned into Water Bengaluru.”

He claimed 5 persons lost their lives in rain related incidents in Bengaluru city and accused the State Government of bringing misery and deaths to the people’s doorsteps.

Meanwhile, traffic at Silk Metro Station was closed and diverted owing to knee deep water level accumulation on the road leading to Silk Board junction. Sources said water level at the Silk Board junction had remained at knee deep level for a couple of days.

Efforts to drain out water hasn’t eased the situation and taking note of the large quantities of water accumulation at Silk Board Metro Station and Silk Board junction, traffic was diverted to Sarjapur road. To drain out water, sources said, water was pumped from the road to a storm water drain nearby. Movement of vehicles on Electronics City flyover was closed.

A lake in Madiwala breached while Information Technology Companies asked its employees to work from home for the second in a row owing to waterlogging of Bengaluru city.
