Ballari: Ex-Legislative Council Chairman Thippanna Passes Away

Thippanna served four terms in the Karnataka Legislative Council and briefly held the post of Council Chairman

Ballari:: Former Chairman of the Karnataka Legislative Council and veteran public figure Thippanna N passed away early Friday morning at his residence in Ballari. He was 97.

A native of Tiravanur in Chitradurga district, Thippanna was a prominent Veerashaiva leader, advocate, and educationist. He had served as president of the state unit of the All India Veerashaiva Mahasabha.

Thippanna served four terms in the Karnataka Legislative Council and briefly held the post of Council Chairman. He was also the Deputy Leader of the Opposition during his tenure. Known for his association with former Chief Minister Ramakrishna Hegde, he contested the Ballari Lok Sabha seat on a Janata Dal ticket but was defeated. Initially, he was associated with JD(U). Later he also served as the state president of the JD(S).

Outside politics, Thippanna had a long and distinguished legal career. He worked as the Public Prosecutor in Ballari for 12 years and served as President of the Karnataka State Advocates’ Association. A graduate in Arts and Law, he also undertook legal study tours in Europe and China.

His contributions to the field of education were equally noteworthy. He served for over 26 years as the Hon. Secretary of the Veerashaiva Vidyavardhaka Sangha in Ballari. He was also a Syndicate Member of Karnataka University for 12 years and a Senate Member of Gulbarga University.

Thippanna held various other roles including President of BDCC Bank, Hospet, and Vice President of the Ramakrishna Vivekananda Centre in Ballari. Known for his deep interest in history and reading, he remained actively engaged in social service throughout his life.

Condolences poured in from political leaders, legal circles, and educational institutions across the state.

He is survived by a son. His last rites will be held on Saturday in his hometown Tiravanur.
