A School Readies To Hoist Tricolour Made From Pet Bottles In Bengaluru

BENGALURU: National flags made from recycled polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles first caught public imagination during ICC Men’s T20 world cup-2024 and inspired the idea, the Green School Bangalore is all set to hoist tricolor made from polyester fabric created entirely out of recycled PET bottles on August 15th to celebrate the 79th Independence Day.
In partnership with a Kanpur-based recycling company that converts discarded plastic into high-quality fabrics, the Green School initiated a mission to make polyester fabric the national flag. While there was a need of 22, 800 PET bottles to produce two flags, the school’s collection drive exceeded the target set and as many as 35,000 bottles were gathered.
“This isn’t just about hoisting a (national) flag,” said Usha Iyer, Principal of The Green School, Bangalore and led the initiative and stated “It’s about showing every child and adult that what we throw away can be reborn as something meaningful.”
The Green School plans to make T-shirts from remaining PET bottles collected during a collection drive to make polyester national flags. Usha Iyer said “In a world drowning in plastic, these flags will not just fly but will speak.”
