A Landslide On Hulikal Ghat Claims 3 In Shivamogga
Police identified the deceased as Raghavendra, supervisor of the road widening works, and a resident of Shivamogga. Shabbir and Raju both belong to Haveri district.

BENGALURU: A landslide during the ongoing road widening works at a hairpin bend on Hulikal Ghat of Hosanagar of Shivamogga killed 3 persons which includes a supervisor and two labourers. All the 3 died on the spot and their bodies were retrieved from the debris by the rescue personnel. The soil slip occurred on Thursday evening at around 6 pm and 3 persons were trapped in the huge soil slip.
Police identified the deceased as Raghavendra, supervisor of the road widening works, and a resident of Shivamogga. Shabbir and Raju both belong to Haveri district. The Hulikal Ghat is part of State Highway-52 where road widening works have been initiated after a halt owing to forest clearance for the project. The Ghat links Shivamogga with Kundapura in Udupi.
Works on widening Hulikal Ghat resumed a couple of days back and a major retaining wall was undertaken as a precautionary measure against landslides on the Ghat road. However, huge quantities of soil caved in on Thursday evening resulting in the death of 3 persons while a couple of other labourers part of the road widening works sustained injuries. The injured were treated at hospitals in Hosanagar and Shivamogga city.
Learning of the incident of landslide on Hulikal Ghat, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah condoled the death of 3 persons in the landslide incident and announced ex gratia of Rs 5 lakh each to the kith and kin of the deceased.
