Kalaburagi: Four accused involved in the recent SBI ATM robbery in Kalaburagi were apprehended by the City Police in a pre-dawn operation on Saturday, with two of them sustaining bullet injuries to their legs after they tried to attack the police while fleeing.
Giving details about the incident, City Police Commissioner Dr Sharanappa SD told Deccan Chronicle that the four accused—Taslim, Sharif, and Shahid from Haryana, and Mohammed Amir from Hyderabad—were intercepted while traveling in a white car during the early hours near the Belur Industrial Area.
Based on a tip-off about the suspects’ movement, a police team led by Suburban Police Inspector Santhosh and PSI Basavaraj began pursuit. As the vehicle reached a dead end, Amir and Shahid surrendered, but Taslim and Sharif allegedly tried to escape and attacked police officers with knives.
Despite warnings, the two continued their attack, prompting the officers to open fire, injuring them in the legs. All four were immediately taken into custody, and the injured were provided medical treatment under police watch.
Four police officials too sustained injuries.
Preliminary investigations revealed that Taslim faces 8–10 criminal cases, Sharif has 3, Shahid has 1, and Mohammed Amir has 7 cases, most related to theft, assault, and recently, ATM robberies- specifically SBI ATMs as they were situated on the city’s outskirts and had larger amounts of cash.
The gang was allegedly behind the April 9 ATM heist near Poojari Circle on Ring Road in Kalaburagi, where they decamped with Rs 18 lakh after disabling CCTV cameras with black spray paint and cutting the machine open with a gas cutter.
“According to our investigation, these four were directly involved in the SBI ATM robbery. Further investigation is on to determine if more individuals were part of the operation,” said Commissioner Sharanappa.
