The missing have been identified as Suresh Kharvi, Rohith Kharvi and Jagadish Kharvi of Malyarubettu. They were part of a group of four fishermen who had ventured into the sea for fishing in a boat owned by Suresh Kharvi.

Udupi: Three fishermen have gone missing after their traditional fishing boat capsized off the Gangolli coast in Udupi district.

The missing have been identified as Suresh Kharvi, Rohith Kharvi and Jagadish Kharvi of Malyarubettu. They were part of a group of four fishermen who had ventured into the sea for fishing in a boat owned by Suresh Kharvi.

According to sources, the sea turned rough during the trip. When the fishermen attempted to return to shore, the boat reportedly overturned due to the high waves. All four were thrown into the water. One fisherman managed to swim to safety by reaching another nearby boat, while the remaining three went missing. A search operation is underway to trace the missing fishermen.

Minister for Women and Child Development and Udupi District In-charge Minister Laxmi Hebbalkar in a press statement prayed for the safe return of the three fishermen.

Soon after learning about the incident, the minister obtained complete details from the officials and instructed them to take all necessary steps to trace the missing fishermen. She also directed the Coastal Security Police to launch a search and rescue operation to bring the three back safely.

The minister further emphasised that fishermen must exercise caution and avoid venturing into the sea during adverse weather conditions. She instructed the district administration to take precautionary measures in such situations.

Fisheries Minister Mankal Vaidya urged fishermen to avoid venturing into the sea during rough weather.

“We have seen several such incidents this year in the coastal districts. It is safer for fishermen to go to sea only when conditions are calm,” he said
