3 Corporations on the Cards Under Greater Bengaluru Authority: Siddaramaiah

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said the constitution of new Corporations splitting BBMP would be taken in coming days and stated Bengaluru will be Greater Bengaluru from now on.

BENGALURU: With the Greater Bengaluru Authority replacing Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) from Thursday and under the Authority 3 new City Corporations would be constituted for governance of Bengaluru city, stated Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. The Greater Bengaluru Authority will be headed by the Chief Minister.

Talking to media persons in Bengaluru on Thursday, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said the constitution of new Corporations splitting BBMP would be taken in coming days and stated Bengaluru will be Greater Bengaluru from now on.

Deputy Chief Minister and Bengaluru incharge minister D.K. Shivakumar termed the Greater Bengaluru Authority “a game changer in urban governance.”

With the Greater Bengaluru Authority, Shivakumar stated the city will be expanded from its 709 sq kms to accommodate the city’s growth and future needs. Besides, there is a provision to constitute up to 7 new City Corporations to manage Bengaluru’s growth, ward committees and City Corporations gain control over budget allocations and local priorities, the Authority empowers local voices through ward-level decision-making opportunities among others.

Earlier, Bharatiya Janaya Party Lok Saha member P.C. Mohan, representing Bengaluru Central seat, termed “The Greater Bengaluru Authority Executive Committee has no place for a Mayor or Lok Sabha members but a Minister handpicked by the Chief Minister gets to be its Chairperson.” Adding, he said, “Any Minister close to the Chief Minister decides the city’s future.”

Mohan stated the Chief Minister wants to control the Authority since Bengaluru brings the cash (highest revenue).

BJP MLA and MLA Dr Ashwathnarayan said the Greater Bengaluru Authority is an anti-democratic step and it has come into effect to meet selfish ends of Congress leaders.

“The Authority is nothing but a division of Bengaluru city for political gains,” he said.
