Karimnagar: Awareness Camp Held for Hemophilia Patients

Karimnagar: Members of the Hemophilia Society, in association with Indegene company, organised an awareness programme on factor VIII and factor IX and about FEIBA (an Anti-Inhibitor Coagulant Complex) for patients suffering from hemophilia in the Peddapalli district on Sunday.

Under the supervision of regional medical officer Dr Naveena, doctors Venkatesh and Kausalya conducted screening tests on around 70 hemophilic patients including children who came from Karimnagar, Peddapalli, Jagtial, Mancherial and Siddipet districts.

Dr Naveena explained that of the two types of hemophilia-A and hemophilia-B, the first type is linked to low levels of clotting factor VIII and the second type which is more rare is associated with low levels of clotting factor IX. Both types can be diagnosed by taking blood samples from hemophilic patients and testing levels of clotting factors.

Factors like VIII and IX are crucial which are responsible for normal blood clotting while the FEIBA is an Anti-Inhibitor Coagulant Complex indicated for use in both the types of hemophilia A and B patients.

Hemophilic patients' factor level can be known by conducting screening tests, which would make it easy for the doctors to give what dosage of medicine and factor injections to treat the patients, she added.

Later, the members of the Hemophilia Society distributed physiotherapy kits to the patients through the hands of RMO Dr Naveena.

Society members Srinivas, Murali Krishna, Ram Prasad, Harish, Mahesh and Ramesh were present.
