YSRCP MP Moves Adjournment Motion on Deteriorating Law and Order in AP
The MP stated that the AP is witnessing a disturbing rise in police excesses, crimes against women, atrocities against scheduled castes, political violence, and serious violations of civil liberties, making the issue one of urgent public importance
TIRUPATI: Tirupati MP, Maddila Gurumurthy, on Monday moved an adjournment motion in the Lok Sabha, alleging deterioration in the law and order situation in Andhra Pradesh and urging the Centre to intervene.
In the notice to the Speaker, the MP alleged an increase in incidents of police harassment, custodial deaths, crimes against women, attacks on Dalits and political violence in the state. He claimed that five recent deaths allegedly linked to police harassment had raised concern over police accountability and public safety.
Gurumurthy referred to the custodial deaths of Sai Krishna from Krishna district and Yedukondalu from Nellore district. He also cited the deaths of Mala Gangamma from Kurnool, Kranthi Kumar from Krishna district and Sheikh Daria Hussain from Piduguralla, alleging they were linked to police harassment.
The MP later said the adjournment motion could not be taken up as the Lok Sabha was adjourned repeatedly following protests by Opposition members.
According to the notice, 209 cases relating to crimes against women were reported in the state between June 2024 and March 2026. These included 126 rape and sexual assault cases, 12 attempted rape cases, 35 cases of sexual harassment, 97 physical assaults, 34 murders or suspicious deaths, and 15 suicides or attempted suicides linked to harassment.
He alleged that 69 incidents involving Dalits and 133 incidents of political violence were reported during the period, including murders, attempted murders, abductions, assaults, property damage and alleged politically motivated suicides.
The MP also claimed that the AP high court had made adverse remarks on the state police’s functioning on 12 occasions.
He urged the Centre to seek a detailed report from the state government, order impartial and time-bound investigations into the alleged incidents, initiate legal action against those found responsible and ensure the protection of citizens' constitutional rights and safety.
