Ill railway employee dies on not being relieved from duty

Vijayawada:A railway employee died while on duty at the Nidadavole Railway Station in East Godavari district on Monday allegedly due to denial of a reliever when he felt sick and wanted to see a doctor.

According to information, G. Ratna Kumar, 46, working as an enquiry-cum-reservation clerk at Nidadavole Railway Station, resumed work after taking sick leave for some days. He reported for work at 8:00 am on Monday with the duty continuing up to 12.00 noon. However, he complained of sickness around 9:00 a.m. and requested the supervisor to relieve him to consult a doctor.

But the supervisor reportedly expressed his helplessness in arranging a reliever immediately due to non-availability of staff. Meanwhile, Ratna Kumar’s health turned serious and he fell down from his chair on the floor. He reportedly suffered a minor injury on his head and fell unconscious.

Office staff members took him in an autorickshaw to the government hospital, where the doctors declared him dead at about 10:15 a.m.

Nidadavole station master Trinadh Babu said, “We don’t have a system to arrange an immediate reliever as those who are on duty have to work until their duty hours are complete. More so when it involves the ticket booking / reservation counter.

Railway employees say fake sick leaves taken by some of the staff have made authorities not to take such claims seriously, resulting in the death of the employee.
