Roar of Asiatic Lion Is Roar of Bharat’s Wild Heritage: Pawan Kalyan
The Asiatic lion is a symbol of India’s rich wildlife heritage and represents pride, courage and the country’s natural legacy.
Amaravati: World Lion Day is observed every year on August 10 to raise awareness about the conservation and protection of lions, including the African and Asiatic lions, across the world.
Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan appreciated Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav for their efforts towards strengthening the long-term conservation of the Asiatic lion.
In a message on X, he said, “The roar of the Asiatic Lion is the roar of Bharat’s wild heritage.”
He said the significant increase in the Asiatic lion population from 411 in 2010 to 891 in 2025 reflects the sustained efforts of successive governments, forest departments, conservationists, wildlife experts, frontline teams and local communities.
Lions Day 2026:
The lion is an integral part of the popular culture of several regions and is among the world’s most iconic and social big cats. Once found across parts of Africa, Asia and Europe, lions are now restricted to a much smaller range due to habitat loss and other threats.
Lions play a key role in maintaining the balance of ecosystems by regulating herbivore populations. They contribute to ecosystem health, support biodiversity and influence natural interactions among species.

The Asiatic lion population has witnessed a significant increase over the years, rising from around 20 lions in the early 20th century to 891 lions as per the 2025 census.
The Government of India has undertaken several conservation initiatives, including Project Lion, launched in 2020, along with efforts to expand the lion’s habitat and develop alternative habitats such as the Barda Wildlife Sanctuary. These measures have contributed significantly to the protection and growth of the Asiatic lion population.
