WAPL to Identify Women's Cricket Talent
AP Women's Commission chief Dr Rayapati Sailaja launches WAPL teaser, aiming to spot women cricket talent from grassroots and rural areas.
The teaser of the Andhra Pradesh Women’s Premier League (WAPL) was released by Andhra Pradesh state Women’s Commission chairperson Dr Rayapati Sailaja at the Andhra Cricket Association (ACA) administrative office here on Tuesday.
ACA director of cricket operations Kalyan Krishna and CEO Jai Kishan briefed her on the tournament, its features and opportunities for women cricketers.
Dr Sailaja said the WAPL would provide a platform to identify women’s cricketing talent, particularly at the grassroots and rural levels, and give players an opportunity to prove themselves at the state level.
She said women cricketers were making the country proud with their performances and urged more young women in Andhra Pradesh to take up the sport, drawing inspiration from players from the state who had excelled nationally and internationally.
Referring to Telugu talent Sricharani, Dr Sailaja said players like her could inspire more youngsters and the WAPL could bring several talented cricketers into the limelight. She said adequate opportunities and encouragement would help women athletes excel at national and international levels and that prestigious tournaments would boost women’s participation in sports.
The WAPL will begin on September 19 at Mangalagiri in the Amaravati region. Dr Sailaja congratulated the ACA and wished the tournament success, expressing hope that it would produce more national and international-level players from the state.
