Waltair Division Fifth Highest Revenue Earner In Indian Railways

Passenger traffic also registered strong growth, rising to 30.58 million — a 10 per cent increase over the previous year

Visakhapatnam: The Waltair Division of the East Coast Railway emerged as the fifth-highest revenue-earning and freight-loading division in Indian Railways in 2025.

Reviewing the year’s performance, Divisional Railway manager Lalit Bohra said the division earned ₹9,030 crore in revenue and handled 73.5 million tonnes of freight loading up to November 2025. In a record achievement, the division crossed 50 million tonnes of freight in just 230 days and surpassed the 100 million tonne milestone in 256 days, the fastest in its history.
Passenger traffic also registered strong growth, rising to 30.58 million — a 10 per cent increase over the previous year. To manage festive and pilgrimage rush, including the Maha Kumbh Mela and Rath Yatra, the division operated 506 special trains and handled 1,803 trains during peak periods.
The Visakhapatnam–Secunderabad Vande Bharat Express was permanently augmented from 16 to 20 coaches in January. On the Araku route, LHB Vistadome and 3AC Economy coaches were added, while 23 originating trains were converted to safer LHB rakes.
On the infrastructure front, more than 360 km of double line was commissioned by March 2025. Projects worth over `1,200 crore were inaugurated, including additional rail lines, flyovers, station upgrades, foot overbridges and passenger amenities.
The division won five zonal-level efficiency shields and Visakhapatnam station received a Platinum-rated Green Railway Station certification, along with a 4-Star Eat Right Station tag.
Fifteen stations are being redeveloped under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, with works completed at Paralakhemundi and nearing completion at Duvvada, Simhachalam, Jagdalpur and Jaipur.
The DRM said revised train timings would come into effect from January 1, 2026, and advised passengers to check schedules through official platforms or by calling 139 before travel.
