VMRDA Unveils New Plans To Promote Tourism At Kailasagiri
There will be a state-of-the-art ropeway system spanning approximately 1.5 kilometres, offering panoramic views of the Bay of Bengal, the Vizag cityscape, and the surrounding hills.

Visakhapatnam:In a significant effort to transform Kailasagiri into a world-class tourist destination, Visakhapatnam Metropolitan Region Development Authority (VMRDA) has issued two new Requests for Proposals (RFPs).
The goal is to turn the iconic hilltop site into a vibrant, multi-sensory experience zone in alignment with global standards, a joint press release by VMRDA chairperson Pranav Gopal and commissioner K.S. Viswanathan said.
“Kailasagiri has been a beloved destination for decades. But like any established tourist hub, it needs to evolve,” said Viswanathan.
At the core of revamp is a state-of-the-art ropeway system replacing the existing one. Unlike the current short-duration ride, the new ropeway will span approximately 1.5 kilometres, offering panoramic views of the Bay of Bengal, the Vizag cityscape, and the surrounding hills. It will also serve the functional purpose of connecting all major attractions atop Kailasagiri, eliminating the need for vehicular traffic on the hill and addressing long-standing parking and accessibility issues.
The new system is expected to significantly increase footfalls to the Telugu Samskruthika Niketanam. Access to it is presently limited.
Adding an element of international excitement, VMRDA is proposing a Luge Gravity Ride, inspired by the popular attraction at Sentosa Island in Singapore. This family-friendly ride, which uses gravity to propel riders down a scenic track, will be the first of its kind in India.
“We want domestic tourists to enjoy world-class thrills without needing a passport,” Pranav Gopal underlined.
In addition, VMRDA is planning development of eco-cottages, a 360-degree revolving fine dining restaurant, and a bay view café. These facilities will utilise partially constructed assets already present on the hill, ensuring optimal utilisation of public infrastructure, while creating unique hospitality experiences.
All these projects will be developed under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, with APUIAML serving as project advisers. The RFPs for the Kailasagiri projects, along with those for the East Coast Habitat Centre (inspired by Delhi’s India Habitat Centre) and the Vizag Experience and Virtual Reality Arena, are now open for bidding.
“This is a win-win for both VMRDA and private investors,” said chairperson Pranav Gopal, pointing out, “We’re offering prime locations, visionary concepts and a clear roadmap. It’s time for entrepreneurs to step forward and help shape the future of Vizag’s tourism.”
