Vijayawada: A delegation from Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC), comprising corporators and officials, visited Nagercoil corporation on Monday as part of their Southern States Study Tour to explore innovative sanitation management practices.
Led by deputy mayor Avuthu Shailaja Reddy, the VMC team was welcomed by Nagercoil Corporation commissioner Nishant Krishna. He highlighted Nagercoil’s efficient waste management system, which operates through six Material Recovery Facility (MRF) plants for waste segregation.
“We’ve outsourced waste collection to specialised agencies whose performance is monitored through a Key Performance Index. All waste is weighed at collection points and tracked via GPS, ensuring 100 per cent door-to-door waste collection coverage,” Mahesh explained.
The mayor also discussed preparations for the summer season, emphasising the release of additional drinking water from dams to ensure an uninterrupted supply during the hotter months. He mentioned that as part of the summer health initiatives, Heat Prevention Kits containing ORS sachets, caps and cooling glasses are distributed to residents.
Commissioner Nishant Krishna highlighted the corporation’s Knowledge Center in Konam, a two-story, 5,300-square-foot building offering free library services to the public. The center is equipped with computers and Wi-Fi, providing valuable resources for residents preparing for competitive examinations.
