VMC Clears Budameru Stream to Prevent Urban Flooding
Drone surveillance helps engineers spot and remove upstream debris and water hyacinth outside city limits.

Vijayawada: The Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) engineering department has taken prompt action to remove blockages in the Budameru stream, ensuring smooth water flow and preventing potential flooding in the city. Acting on the directives of Vijayawada municipal commissioner H.M. Dhyanachandra, officials cleared accumulated debris and water hyacinth near the SLV Grand area in Ramavarappadu Panchayat limits on Sunday.
Dhyanachandra said that though the VMC routinely desilts the Budameru stream within municipal boundaries, engineers recently detected an obstruction in the flow further upstream. He further said that using drone surveillance, they identified piled-up waste and water hyacinth near SLV Grand in Ramavarappadu, an area outside municipal jurisdiction. He mentioned that recognising that blockages in upstream areas could still impact Vijayawada’s drainage system, the engineering team swiftly deployed long-arm cranes to clear the debris.
The commissioner pointed out that while the Budameru, Bandar, Eluru, and Ryves canals flow through the city, their endpoints often lie outside municipal limits, and any obstruction in these areas could lead to water stagnation in Vijayawada. He has instructed officials to monitor these channels rigorously, ensuring zero hindrances even beyond the city’s jurisdiction.
He praised VMC chief engineer R. Srinath Reddy, superintending engineers P. Satyanarayana and P. Satyakumari, executive engineer Srinivas Reddy, and deputy engineer Sindhoora for their proactive measures. He urged all officials to remain alert, especially during the Krishna River’s flood season, and to report any concerns immediately.
