The judge encouraged greater utilisation of Lok Adalat services for speedy disposal of cases, with the next such adalat scheduled on September 13.

VISAKHAPATNAM: Vizianagaram district police have topped the state in securing convictions in crimes against women.
Following the half-year crime review meeting held on Saturday, Visakhapatnam Range deputy inspector general (DIG) Gopinath Jatti congratulated both police and judicial officers for investigating the crimes, collecting proof and following up the case in courts for securing conviction of the accused, whether in cases of attacks on women or under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Posco) Act.
He called for coordinated monitoring of security arrangements in both private and government hostels housing women by ensuring compound walls, having security guards and installing CCTV cameras.
The DIG expressed concern that many students are being arrested for becoming cannabis users as well as suppliers. "People addicted to cannabis should be identified at the primary level, sent to de-addiction centres, and provided with necessary treatment," the DIG stressed.
District SP Vakul Jindal detailed the measures for combating the drug menace, like dynamic vehicle checking being conducted in 10 areas daily, five of them organising extensive screening. He said that the department has identified 18 gangs involved in cannabis business. Preventive Detention Act has been invoked against repeat offenders. Financial investigations have yielded substantial results, with assets worth approximately ₹5 crore of four accused frozen by authorities.
District collector Dr. B.R. Ambedkar announced major technological upgrades in supporting law enforcement operations. A budget of ₹5 lakh has been sanctioned to install 66 CCTV cameras along the national highway. Plans are underway to secure 34 drones, one for each police station.
Principal district judge M. Babita emphasised the importance of filing meticulous charge sheets and preparing witnesses and cases properly to secure convictions in courts.
The judge encouraged greater utilisation of Lok Adalat services for speedy disposal of cases, with the next such adalat scheduled on September 13.
Police department has successfully disposed of 7,278 cases through Lok Adalat proceedings this year, securing convictions in 25 POCSO cases and 18 in other criminal cases.
