Vizag residents relish tati munjalu despite high price

Visakhapatnam: In an unexpected development, ice apples, popularly called tati munjalu, which typically arrive in the market during summer, appeared in Vizag city's markets on Thursday.

Though surprised by the early arrival of munjalu, citizens enjoyed them, though they had to pay a high price.
Tati munjalu is the Palmyra palm fruit, named variously in regional languages. The delectable fruit is characterised by its translucent, jelly-like flesh. Traditionally found on the streets of AP during summer months, it is known for its cooling effect on the body. Thus, ice apple is its apt name.
The fruit benefits overall health, with a favourable combination of minerals and sugars that support hydration during the hot months. It is notably rich in B vitamins, iron and calcium. It is said to alleviate symptoms of skin conditions, such as chickenpox.
It ranks among the most sought-after summer fruits for combating extreme heat.
The current market price of a dozen tati munjalu is Rs120, positioning the fruit as a luxury item, rather than for everyone’s indulgence. The steep cost is primarily attributed to the off-season harvest and limited availability.
Vendors seized the opportunity to maximise their profits.
