Vizag Port Will Cross 100 MMT Cargo Throughput: Sonowal

The minister said Vizag Port was among the best-performing ports in the country and ranked within the top 100 ports globally

Visakhapatnam: Union minister for ports, shipping and waterways Sarbananda Sonowal on Saturday expressed confidence that the Visakhapatnam Port Authority (VPA) would cross 100 million metric tonnes (MMT) of cargo throughput in the coming years.

Laying the foundation stone for several port projects in Visakhapatnam, the minister said Vizag Port was among the best-performing ports in the country and ranked within the top 100 ports globally. He noted that the state and Central governments were working in close coordination to strengthen the maritime sector in line with the Prime Minister’s vision.

The minister laid the foundation stone for four major projects at Sagaramala Conventions, Saligrampuram. These include the upgradation of LPG berth firefighting facilities at a cost of ₹52.23 crore to meet OISD norms, ship repair and revenue generation works costing ₹35.87 crore, construction of the G+9 Dr B.R. Ambedkar Administrative Bhavan with green building standards at ₹97.70 crore, and residential apartments at Harbour Park costing ₹44.20 crore to support land monetisation and improve living amenities.

Addressing a gathering, Visakhapatnam East MLA P. Vishnukumar Raju appreciated the VPA management for addressing issues efficiently and lauded its CSR initiatives benefiting the needy. Vizag MP M. Sri Bharat said the port had played a key role in the city’s development and expressed confidence that the ongoing projects would be completed on schedule.

Later, the Union minister distributed course completion certificates and placement orders to students of CEMS trained under the sponsorship of the Visakhapatnam Port Authority.
