Vizag Outperforms State With Sharp Fall In Crime In 2025

Addressing the annual crime review meeting, commissioner of police Sankhabrata Bagchi said the total number of cases registered in the city fell to 5,168 in 2025, from 5,921 in 2024, marking a 12.71 per cent decline.

Bodily offences declined significantly, from 815 cases in 2024 to 671 in 2025. However, murder cases rose from 24 to 35, a trend the said was being closely monitored. Attempted murder cases declined from 159 to 135, while kidnapping and abduction cases dropped sharply from 27 to 17.

Crimes against women showed a substantial reduction, falling from 1,121 cases in 2024 to 951 in 2025. Rape cases halved, declining from 126 to 63, while dowry deaths reduced from five to two cases. Crimes against children also dropped significantly, from 131 cases in 2024 to 75 in 2025.

Property offences remained largely stable, rising marginally from 1,149 cases in 2024 to 1,159 in 2025. However, the value of property lost declined from ͅ₹9.38 crore to ₹7.82 crore. Police recovered property worth ₹4.90 crore in 2025, compared to ₹4.96 crore in 2024.

Road accidents reduced from 1,132 cases in 2024 to 1,086 in 2025. During the year, 349 persons died and 1,038 were injured. Through the Road Traffic Accident Victim Assistance Centre, compensation amounting to ₹80 lakh was facilitated for 100 victims, an initiative that won the SKOCH Silver Award 2025.

Visakhapatnam became the first district in Andhra Pradesh to invoke the BUDS Act, registering 26 cases. Under the NDPS Act, 226 cases were registered in 2025. Police seized 10,147.590 kg of ganja, 19.310 litres of hashish oil, and 1 kg of opium, with the total value of seized narcotics estimated at ₹5.21 crore.

Cybercrime cases declined to 286 in 2025, with 160 cyber fraudsters arrested. Police traced 1,257 missing persons, including 972 cases from 2025 and 285 cases from previous years. Of 134 missing children, six were traced using RFID tagging.

The courts disposed of 4,706 cases in 2025, with 11,669 convictions recorded. Notably, two POCSO cases resulted in convictions within 146 days and 234 days, respectively.

In a major recognition, Visakhapatnam was adjudged one of the safest cities for women in India in 2025, according to the NARI (National Annual Ranking of India).
