Vizag Emerges As India’s Data Centre Capital In 2025
A landmark agreement between the Andhra Pradesh government and Google anchored the ambitious AI City Vizag project: Reports

VISAKHAPATNAM: The year 2025 marked a defining shift for Visakhapatnam as the port city emerged as India’s data centre capital, driven by mega investment proposals led by a 1-GW hyperscale data centre campus by Google and similar initiatives by global technology players.
A landmark agreement between the Andhra Pradesh government and Google anchored the ambitious AI City Vizag project. The proposed 1-GW hyperscale campus is expected to integrate clean energy solutions, generate up to 1.8 lakh jobs, and accelerate AI-driven transformation across the region.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi described the initiative as a transformative step for India’s digital economy and technological growth.
Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, in a post on X, said Visakhapatnam was “getting on the world map for technology investments,” adding that the development marked a major milestone for the state.
BJP MLA from Visakhapatnam P. Vishnu Kumar Raju said the MoU had placed the city firmly on the global digital technology map. He noted that within the next five years, Visakhapatnam would emerge as a major IT hub for Andhra Pradesh. He recalled that his family-run enterprise, managed by his daughter Shyamala Deepika, had laid the foundation for IT firms in the city.
Prof Mallikarjuna Rao, head of the department of electrical engineering at Andhra University College of Engineering and a mentor to several start-ups on campus, said the development would give budding entrepreneurs in the region access to advanced platforms to address long-standing industry challenges across technological verticals.
Other major players include Meta (Facebook), which is partnering with Sify Technologies to set up a 500-MW hyperscale AI centre at Paradesipalem. Sify Technologies is also building an AI-driven edge data centre and an open cable landing station at Madhurawada. AdvaniConnex is planning a 100-MW data centre at Madhurawada, focusing on connectivity and renewable energy, while Reliance, Brookfield, and Digital Realty are planning a 1-GW standalone AI data centre park.
Government sources said Visakhapatnam aims to become India’s first AI hub, leveraging Google’s investment to deliver advanced AI, machine learning and cloud services. The city is also fast emerging as a global connectivity hub, with dedicated subsea cable landing stations linking India to Southeast Asia and other international markets.
