Visakhapatnam: The Andhra Pradesh prisons department on Thursday launched its first IT-based skill training programme for inmates at the Central Prison in Visakhapatnam.
The programme, titled “Office Assistant”, was inaugurated by district collector M. Abhishikth Kishore in collaboration with the Skill Development Institute (SDI), Visakhapatnam.
The first batch comprises 30 inmates, mostly young remand prisoners booked in NDPS cases. The two-month programme aims to equip inmates with IT and office management skills to improve rehabilitation and employment opportunities after release.
The training includes computer applications, office administration, digital communication, handling office equipment and employability skills. Participants will receive certification from SDI after successful completion of the course.
Addressing the gathering, the collector said skill development programmes inside prisons could help inmates rebuild their lives and reintegrate into society. He later interacted with the trainees and encouraged them to use the programme for self-improvement.
The collector also visited prison industries and the Skill Development Block and reviewed the vocational training activities being conducted for inmates.
Prison superintendent M. Mahesh Babu said the initiative reflected the department’s focus on correctional reforms through education, vocational training and capacity building.
