Visakhapatnam Port Authority Sets Record With 91.17 MMT Cargo Throughput

This represents a growth of over 10 per cent compared to the previous year

Visakhapatnam: The Visakhapatnam Port Authority has achieved a historic milestone by recording its highest-ever cargo throughput of 91.17 million metric tonnes in the financial year 2025–26.

This represents a growth of over 10 per cent compared to the previous year.

The achievement not only surpasses the prior record of 82.62mmt but also reinforces the port's position among India's leading ports, marking another significant milestone in its 92-year history, according to VPA chairperson, M Angamuthu.

The port's success was celebrated at a stakeholders' meeting on April 2, where Angamuthu commended the collective efforts of the VPA team, partner organisations and government institutions. He encouraged everyone to exceed 100mmt target next year.

Commodities driving this strong performance included petroleum, crude oil, iron ore and fertilizers, alongside enhanced operational efficiency that reduced turnaround times and berth delays. Notable operational achievements included handling over half a million tonnes of cargo in a single day and managing 24 vessel movements within 24 hours.

Improvements in advanced marine systems, robust safety protocols and infrastructure upgrades, such as expanded berths, storage facilities, and a 176-kilometre railway network, have strengthened the port's capacity.

The port’s capability to handle Cape-size vessels and deep drafts has provided a competitive advantage, while innovative practices, like Gemini operations for heavy-lift cargo, have boosted productivity.

VPA is preparing to operate the Mulapeta port in collaboration with the state government, and plans a special-purpose vehicle for the Duggarajapatnam port and a shipbuilding unit.

The chairperson promised citizens that the port is transitioning toward handling cleaner, non-dusty cargo, with coal operations expected to move to Mulapeta. Mechanisation of the operations is anticipated to facilitate future expansion.

Deputy chairperson Roshni Aparanji Korati praised the team's performance and echoed the call to achieve the 100mmt milestone.
