Visakhapatnam Police Secure 69 Convictions In Seven Months

Deputy commissioner of police (Law and Order) Mary Prasanthi, addressing a press conference on Saturday, said the convictions included one death sentence, two life imprisonment sentences till death, 10 life imprisonment terms, and several other sentences ranging from three months to 25 years of rigorous imprisonment.

Visakhapatnam: The Visakhapatnam city police have secured convictions in 69 cases since June 12, 2024, marking a significant achievement in criminal justice enforcement.

Deputy commissioner of police (Law and Order) Mary Prasanthi, addressing a press conference on Saturday, said the convictions included one death sentence, two life imprisonment sentences till death, 10 life imprisonment terms, and several other sentences ranging from three months to 25 years of rigorous imprisonment. Two cases also resulted in the imposition of fines.

The DCP highlighted five cases in which convictions were secured swiftly, all involving heinous crimes against minors under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act.

In the fastest case, concluded within five months, the Visakhapatnam Special Pocso Court sentenced a father to life imprisonment till death for sexually assaulting his four-year-old daughter. The court also ordered compensation of ₹5 lakh to the victim.

In another case, completed within six months, two accused were sentenced to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment each and fined ₹25,000 for the rape of a minor girl, with the court awarding `40,000 as compensation.

In a separate case involving the rape of two minor daughters by their father, the court awarded 20 years of rigorous imprisonment within 10 months and ordered compensation of `3 lakh to each victim.

The Special Pocso Court also sentenced an accused to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment in two other cases — one involving the rape of a minor girl with physical and mental disabilities, decided within eight months with compensation of ₹4 lakh, and another rape case of a minor girl, concluded within nine months, with the fine amount awarded as compensation.
