Visakhapatnam: Pilot Programme Launched to Empower Adolescent Boys

The programme aims to promote positive attitudes, responsible behavior, gender equality, respect for women and essential life skills.

Visakhapatnam: The Andhra Pradesh government has launched a special pilot programme to empower adolescent boys by promoting positive attitudes, responsible behavior, gender equality, respect for women and essential life skills, besides helping prevent child marriages.

‘Adolescent Boys Empowerment Module’ is being implemented in 81 tribal welfare residential schools in Alluri Sitarama Raju district through a joint initiative of the women development and child welfare (WCD) department, UNICEF, Padala Charitable Trust, tribal welfare department and the district administration.

As part of the programme, 121 teachers, with one or two nodal teachers selected from each school, are being trained in three batches. The first batch underwent training at Araku Valley on September 8 and 9, while the second batch was trained at Paderu on September 10 and 11. The third batch will be trained at the Government Training Centre, Chintapalli, on September 16 and 17.

Women and child welfare department secretary A. Suryakumari interacted with nodal teachers during the first batch at Araku Valley, obtained their feedback and formally released the module.
