Visakhapatnam Emerges as a Rising Water Sports Hub Amid Safety Concerns
Local authorities and sports associations actively promote enhanced training initiatives and public awareness campaigns in response to these concerns.

Visakhapatnam: The city is rapidly emerging as a hotspot for water sports, with kite-boarding et all in what may soon become a thriving adventure industry.
Visakhapatnam’s coastal winds, scenic shores and favourable climate attract enthusiasts from across the region and beyond. With its natural beauty and weather, local officials and tourism experts believe that city would become a vibrant hub for water-based adventures.
Over the recent months, adventure sports operators have reported a steady increase in interest as tourists and residents eagerly explore kite-boarding, jet skiing and other water sports. “Our coast possesses all the elements necessary for an exciting water sports culture. The first lesson in kite-boarding covers environmental assessment and safety protocols,” noted Avishma Matta, an independent instructor certified by the International Kiteboarding Organisation.
She noted that Visakhapatnam's unique geography plays a significant role in drawing adventure seekers. The rhythmic crash of waves and reliable coastal breezes set an inspiring stage for high-adrenaline activities.
“With its magnificent coastline and warm climate, the city holds immense potential in water sports tourism,” Avishma adds.
Despite the surge in popularity, safety remains a concern. Sports enthusiast B Venkat Kumar warned, “Kite-boarding is an intense sport that requires excellent swimming skills and proper training.” Without comprehensive instruction, even experienced swimmers may face risk due to unpredictable currents and varying wind speeds. This caution underscores the need for structured training programmes to prevent accidents and ensure a secure sports environment.
Local authorities and sports associations actively promote enhanced training initiatives and public awareness campaigns in response to these concerns.
The district sports authority, in collaboration with the canoeing and kayaking association of Andhra Pradesh, organised a water sports summer camp in Rushikonda Beach on May 8. The camp provided special training in sea kayaking and stand-up paddling for various age groups, while the Indian Navy’s surfing camp ran concurrently, highlighting strong inter-agency cooperation.
Community engagement programmes are also under way to educate aspiring adventurers on essential safety protocols and proper instruction before attempting high-risk activities. "Fostering a nurturing and safe sports culture is just as essential as experiencing the excitement of the game. We are deeply committed to making this a reality," district sports development officer June Galliat shared.
Local officials and enthusiasts agree that every ride on the waves must begin with skill, awareness and a steadfast commitment to safety, paving the way for a sustainable adventure sports legacy along this breathtaking stretch of coast.
