Visakhapatnam embraces 'Haleem Fever' as Ramzan approaches

Haleem, a rich and flavourful stew that combines wheat, lentils, and meat into a thick paste, has become a cultural touchstone, attracting people from diverse backgrounds, including students and even foreign visitors.

Excitement is mounting in Visakhapatnam as the city prepares to welcome the holy month of Ramzan, expected to begin on either February 28 or March 1, depending on the sighting of the crescent moon. The anticipation is palpable across the city, manifested most visibly in what locals are calling "haleem fever."

Streets throughout Visakhapatnam are bustling with activity as numerous food stalls prepare to serve the traditional Ramzan delicacy. Haleem, a rich and flavourful stew that combines wheat, lentils, and meat into a thick paste, has become a cultural touchstone, attracting people from diverse backgrounds, including students and even foreign visitors.
Zubair, who operates a seasonal haleem stall, shared his enthusiasm with Deccan Chronicle, stating, "My stall operates exclusively during Ramzan, ensuring exceptional quality and generous portions. Throughout the season, we welcome a diverse clientele, and our shop remains open from 4 pm to 10 pm."




He detailed the pricing structure for this year's offerings, with chicken haleem priced between `130 and `150 for small portions, `230 to `250 for medium, and `500 for large family packs. Mutton haleem will be available at `180 for small portions, `350 for medium, and `600 for family packs.
Addressing concerns about the recent flu outbreak, Zubair reassured customers that proper cooking techniques eliminate any health risks. "When food is cooked above 50 degrees Celsius, it is not harmful," he explained, adding that they've received positive feedback from customers despite health concerns. He further said that last year, around 1,500 to 2,000 people visited daily, with a total of 20,000 to 30,000 visitors throughout Ramzan.
This year, vendors have also introduced new items to their menus, including Hyderabadi Kaddu Kheer priced at `50, offering more variety for Ramzan celebrants.
Some haleem centres have already begun operations in Akkayapalem.
Based on the lunar Islamic calendar, Ramzan in 2025 is expected to begin on the evening of February 28, though the exact date remains tentative as it depends on the sighting of the crescent moon.
