VIMS Sets Up 20-Bed COVID Ward amid Rising Concern over New Variants

The precautionary steps follow the confirmation of a Covid-19 case in the city.

Visakhapatnam: In response to the resurgence of Covid -19 in new forms, Dr K. Rambabu, director of the Visakhapatnam Institute of Medical Sciences (VIMS), announced the establishment of a special ward with 20 beds at VIMS Hospital, following government directives. The move comes amid concerns over emerging variants JN1, LF7, and NB1.8.

The precautionary steps follow the confirmation of a Covid-19 case in the city. Rapid test kits have been made available for screening to ensure swift detection. Any positive rapid test results will be further verified through RT-PCR testing. Frontline medical staff have received personal protective equipment (PPE) kits and essential medications to handle potential infections.

Dr Rambabu emphasised the importance of public vigilance, urging individuals to maintain physical distance and avoid large gatherings. He advised vulnerable groups, including elderly citizens and pregnant women, to limit outdoor activity except in emergencies. Additionally, he reinforced the necessity of wearing masks and frequent hand sanitisation as essential safety measures.
