Vijayawada Railway Division Turns Scrap Into Useful Art

The Vijayawada Division of South Coast Railway (SCoR) has stepped up waste management and recycling initiatives as part of the nationwide Swachhata Hi Sewa campaign held on September 28 and 29, with the theme “Swachhata Se Samriddhi”.

Railway staff at stations, colonies and workshops participated in cleanliness and environmental awareness programmes, focusing on waste management, recycling and reuse of scrap material.

Under the “Kabaad Se Jugaad” and “Kabaad Se Kala” initiatives, old signalling equipment, coach components and other metal scrap were turned into useful articles and display installations. These were placed at railway stations, colonies and workshops to create awareness among passengers and staff about recycling and reuse.

Vijayawada station, Electric Loco Shed, Diesel Loco Shed, Wagon Depot and Coaching Depots at Kakinada Port and Vijayawada participated in the initiative.

Plastic Recycling Melas were organised at major stations and divisional locations. Vendors, catering units, canteens and bulk waste generators were sensitised and linked with authorised recycling agencies for collection and processing of plastic waste.

The division is establishing forward linkages with authorised recyclers to ensure plastic waste collected from stations, tracks and railway colonies is segregated and properly recycled.

Awareness and cleanliness drives were also held at 20 locations, including Rajahmundry, Eluru, Nellore, Tenali, Ongole, Anakapalle and Kakinada.

Divisional Railway Manager Mohit Sonakiya said the initiatives would strengthen sustainable waste management practices across railway premises.
