Vijayawada Police Recover 600 Stolen Mobile Phones

Regarding purchase of second-hand phones, the commissioner said purchasing stolen devices can lead to legal trouble. Hence, people should avoid the same.

Vijayawada: NTR district and Vijayawada city police commissioner S.V. Rajasekhar Babu announced the recovery of 600 mobile phones valued at Rs 60 lakh. Police handed over the recovered mobile phones to their owners at the Police Command Control Room in Vijayawada on Tuesday.

Rajasekhar Babu disclosed that 504 of the mobiles had been recovered from Andhra Pradesh, 20 from Odisha, 18 from Karnataka, 16 from Maharashtra, 13 from Rajasthan, 12 from Uttar Pradesh, 10 from Bihar, and seven from West Bengal. 316 of the phones had been recovered from within the NTR district police commissionerate area alone, apart from 25 in Krishna district.

The police commissioner said CCTV surveillance is helping reduce crime by 20–25 per cent. Under the Suraksha programme, thousands of CCTV cameras have been installed in the NTR district commissionerate. Likewise, as part of the Divine Suraksha plan, cameras are being set up at temples, mosques and churches. “During July alone, we installed nearly 1,000 cameras and 6,000 in the past six months, around cameras were installed. We aim to put every village, school and public area under CCTV surveillance,” Rajasekhar Babu underlined.

On cybercrimes, he said police have successfully curbed ‘digital arrest’ scams. They are now focusing on raising awareness about investment frauds. He advised people to lodge complaints through the CEIR portal, which allows stolen phones to be blocked immediately. “If a different SIM is inserted in the phone, we get an automatic alert,” he explained.
