Vijayawada Bypass Accident Claims 2 Lives, Police Cite Coconut Stuck In Pedals As Cause

Police suspect a coconut, which was at the back side of the car, might have rolled forward and lodged between the brake and clutch pedals, which might have caused the driver to lose control and cause the collision.

Vijayawada: In a freak mishap, two people were killed in a road accident on the Vijayawada West bypass near Jakkampudi, Chittinagar area in the district, in Andhra Pradesh, on Saturday. The deceased were identified as Duvvuri Hari Prasad, 52, a priest from Rajamahendravaram, and Suriboyina Guravayya, 60, a VRA from Boyamadugula village in Chandrasekharapuram mandal, Markapuram district.

According to police reports, Hari Prasad’s younger son’s wedding was held in Hyderabad on Thursday. On Friday afternoon, family members left for Rajamahendravaram in two cars. Hari Prasad was driving a car accompanied by a relative, along with pooja items. The relative got down at Nallagunta, in Vijayawada

When reaching the Gollapudi bypass road, the car apparently lost control, hit a two-wheeler, and then rammed into a stationary container in front. Police suspect a coconut, which was part of the pooja items stored in the back of the car, might have rolled forward and lodged between the brake and clutch pedals, jamming the pedals and causing the driver to lose control, leading to the collision.

Due to the impact, Hari Prasad and Guravayya, who was sitting behind the two-wheeler, died on the spot. Police state that Guravayya had come to a private hospital in Guntur for treatment on Friday and was returning to Vijayawada on a two-wheeler with his son Harikrishna. Guravayya was on the pillion. When the car hit the bike, Guravayya was thrown off and died on the spot. Luckily, his son, who was wearing a helmet, escaped with injuries.

Police have sent the body to Vijayawada Hospital for post-mortem, registered a case, and are investigating further.
