Rao shared his ideas on the topic, “Reimagining higher education for global skills – positioning India as a global leader through talent prepared for future needs," and also spoke on the role of universities in national progress.

Sudarsana Rao emphasized the need for radical changes in the Indian higher education system to align it with evolving global demands, rapid technological advancements and the skill requirements of the industry.

He suggested that universities should transform into centers that foster creativity, a research-oriented mindset, problem-solving abilities, skills, ethical values, and a commitment to lifelong learning among students, rather than functioning merely as institutions that award degrees.

Rao cited four priorities for transforming higher education beyond degrees by shaping skilled graduates for the future. He emphasized the need to evaluate student success based on actual skills, practical knowledge, multidisciplinary understanding, and creative thinking, rather than relying solely on academic qualifications.

He stated that students should be prepared for future job opportunities and global competition through experiential learning, project-based instruction, and flexible educational pathways.

Prof Rao highlighted the necessity of effective partnerships among universities, international educational institutions, research centers, and industries. He explained that student employability could be enhanced by designing curricula aligned with international standards, introducing micro-credentials, expanding internship opportunities, and encouraging practical projects focused on real-world industry challenges.

The event saw an emphasis on digital education, Artificial Intelligence, and research & innovation. Rao noted that digital technology plays a pivotal role in making quality education accessible to all. He suggested expanding the development of structured e-content, modern teaching methodologies, and technology-driven learning systems.

The VC emphasized the need to prioritize research, innovation, and critical thinking to enable students to acquire proficiency in emerging technological fields such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) and quantum computing.

He highlighted the importance of formulating higher education policies aligned with evolving national and global needs, providing students with flexible entry and exit options, promoting academic credit transfers, and expanding international educational collaborations. He suggested that universities evolve into dynamic hubs that cultivate a skilled workforce capable of adapting to rapidly changing economic and technological landscapes.

Professor Sudarshana Rao said higher education is not merely a process of imparting knowledge but it serves as the foundation for the nation's economic growth, technological advancement, human resource development, and social transformation. He emphasized that the primary objectives of universities should be to foster a research-oriented mindset among the youth, develop their capacity to find innovative solutions to real-world problems, and prepare them to seize global opportunities.

The discussions highlighted that India can further strengthen its position in the global skill development landscape by enhancing coordination among educational institutions, industries, policymakers, and international universities.
