Urban Police Stations Face Scrutiny Over Irregularities

Anantapur: Urban police stations in the Rayalaseema region are facing increased scrutiny following allegations of irregularities and private settlements, with several circle inspectors serving as station house officers facing disciplinary action.

At least five inspectors have been sent to Vacancy Reserve (VR) as punishment over alleged involvement in corrupt practices in the past few weeks, prompting higher authorities to closely monitor urban police stations.

In the latest development, Anantapur I Town inspector B. Venkateswarlu was reportedly sent to VR on Sunday following allegations against him. He had taken charge a few months ago. B. Karunakar was posted as One Town inspector and assumed charge on Monday.

Pulivendula Urban inspector K. Sriram was transferred to VR in Kadapa last month following an inquiry into alleged encroachment of land belonging to family members of former minister Y.S. Vivekananda Reddy. The inquiry by Pulivendula RDO G. Chinnaiah reportedly found that the land had been encroached upon and fake pattadar passbooks created. Though a case was registered, the accused were not arrested, following which Kurnool DIG Koya Praveen ordered Mr Sriram’s transfer to VR.

The Anantapur police administration had earlier taken action in connection with a honey-trap case involving alleged police personnel. Two CIs were initially sent to VR, followed by the dismissal and suspension of several personnel two months ago.

Madakasira Urban inspector in Sri Sathya Sai district also faced allegations of abusing a tribal woman, following which action was taken against him.

SPs are now focusing on urban stations and public grievances received through Spandana.

“We are verifying and trying to solve grievances of the public at Spandana every Monday by entrusting to responsible police stations,” Anantapur SP P. Jagadish said.
