Uravakonda Gavimath Pontiff Passes Away

Established in the 18th century, the Uravakonda Gavimath has a network of about 770 branches across Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Karnataka. The institution runs several educational establishments and supports poor students through its branches.

Sri Chennabasava Rajendra Mahaswamy was appointed as the seer of the Tumakuru Mutt in 1960. He became the seventh Uttaradhikari of the Uravakonda Gavimath in 1984 and assumed charge as Peethadhipathi in 1996.

The pontiff had been suffering from age-related ailments and had been residing at the Ballari Mutt for the past few months. His mortal remains were brought to the Gavimath at Uravakonda, where the last rites will be performed according to the traditions of the mutt. The body was kept for devotees, disciples, religious leaders and public representatives to pay their last respects.

The seer's demise has cast a pall of gloom among devotees in Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. He was widely respected for his spiritual guidance and religious service spanning several decades.

Finance minister Payyavula Keshav visited the Gavimath on Sunday and paid floral tributes to the departed pontiff. Hundreds of devotees and followers also paid their respects.
