Nalgonda: Two Deputy Superintendents of Police (DSPs) from Andhra Pradesh with families in Hyderabad, died on the spot and two other police personnel were injured in a road accident on National Highway No. 65 near Kaithapuram in Choutuppal mandal of Yadadri-Bhongir district in the early hours of Saturday.
DSP M. Chakradhar Rao (57) from Goshamahal and DSP J. Shantha Rao (54) from Hayathnagar died on the spot in the accident. Additional superintendent of police K.D.M.V.R. Prasad and driver R. Narsing Rao (54) sustained injuries. All four were serving in the Intelligence Security Wing of the Andhra Pradesh Police. Shantha Rao was part of the special security team responsible for the security of the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh. The injured were shifted to Kamineni Hospital at LB Nagar in Hyderabad for treatment.
According to police, the accident occurred around 4.30 am when the SUV carrying the officers from Vijayawada to Hyderabad lost control and collided with a truck after hitting the divider near Kaithapuram. The vehicle, driven by Narsing Rao, veered off course and rammed into a truck travelling in the Hyderabad-bound lane of the highway.
Chakradhar Rao and Shantha Rao, who were seated in the middle row of the Scorpio, died on the spot due to multiple injuries. The additional SP and the driver, seated in the front, sustained injuries. Officials noted that wearing a seatbelt likely saved the life of the additional SP.
On receiving the information, Choutuppal police rushed to the scene and extricated the trapped officials from the vehicle. The injured were first given aid at a nearby hospital before being shifted to Kamineni Hospital. Their condition is stated to be stable.
It is learned that the officers were en route to Hyderabad for official duty. Initially, they had not started their journey in the SUV that met with the accident. Their original vehicle broke down between Nakrekal and Narketpally, following which their office in Hyderabad sent the ill-fated vehicle to pick them up. The original driver stayed behind with the broken-down vehicle.
Choutuppal police suspect overspeeding and drowsy driving to be the cause of the accident.
