Visakhapatnam: Around 21,850 tribal students from five mandals of Paderu district came together on Monday to perform 108 Surya Namaskars, setting a new world record on the World Health Day. The event, hailed as a testament to the potential of tribal youth, saw over 13,000 girls among the participants.

District in-charge minister Gummadi Sandhya Rani called the programme auspicious and praised the students' determination and discipline.

The record-breaking initiative is the culmination of five months of rigorous yoga practice, with students from tribal hostels waking up at 4 a.m. daily to train under the guidance of physical education teachers (PETs), school staff, and tribal welfare officers.

District collector A.S. Dinesh Kumar highlighted the transformative impact of the programme, pointing out that it had led to significant improvements in the students’ academic performance, cognitive abilities, and physical and mental health.

London World Records Union manager Alice Raynaud travelled from Chennai to oversee the event and certify the world record. She meticulously inspected the grounds where the students performed in unison, ensuring that the feat met global standards.
