Traffic Rule Violations Become Dearer for Kurnool Motorists

KURNOOL: Reckless disregard for traffic rules whether borne out of negligence or belief that one can get away appears to be on the rise among a section of motorists in Kurnool district.
Police crackdowns over the past year have exposed such lapses, including missing vehicle documents, riding without helmets, over-speeding and driving without a valid licence. The rule violators are feeling the pinch with hefty penalty pay-outs.
What has particularly surprised enforcement officials is the sheer number of motorists who appear unaware of even the most basic requirement that driving without a licence is illegal. Many have paid a heavy price for flouting this rule.
The fines are largely being imposed through the e-challan system.
In 2025, as many as 81,014 motorists in Kurnool district have been fined for violating the various provisions of Motor Vehicles Act. Of these, over 27,000 involve driving without a licence or a registration certificate (RC).
More than 10,000 riders have been penalised for not wearing helmets, while over 7,000 motorists had to pay fines for over-speeding after being caught on surveillance cameras.
The total value of e-challans issued during the last year stood at ₹2.60 crore, the highest for any district in Andhra Pradesh, according to officials. Of this, around ₹94.80 lakh has been collected so far. ₹1.66 crore of the fines remain due.
Kurnool SP Vikrant Patil said the department has been educating motorists in multiple ways, as road safety ultimately depends on public cooperation. “If motorists follow rules with discipline, they can reach home safely. Traffic laws apply to everyone, and no one will be spared for violations,” he maintained.
