Toll of AP Pilgrims Killed in Bihar Road Mishap Rises to Four

Bodies of three victims who died arrived at Chennai Airport on Tuesday night. Their last rites have been performed at their native places on Wednesday

Nellore: The death toll of pilgrims from Andhra Pradesh going to Varanasi in a tourist bus that met with an accident in Aurangabad district of Bihar on Sunday night has risen to four.

Bommesetti Lakshmamma, 65, of Sangam in Nellore district, who had been among the 15 injured in the accident, succumbed to her injuries while undergoing treatment in the ICU of a hospital in Bihar. Authorities are making arrangements to shift Lakshmamma’s body to Sangam by an ambulance.

The tourist bus had been carrying 43 pilgrims from AP to Varanasi. An oncoming vehicle collided with it head on in Bihar’s Aurangabad district on Sunday night killing three on the spot and injuring 15. The injured had been shifted to hospitals nearest to the accident spot.

In the interim, AP authorities flew the bodies of three victims – Ch. Hazrataiah, 60, a native of Sangam, P. Venkateswarlu, 63, from Nellore, and T. Padmavati, 63, from Atmakur – to the Chennai Airport on Tuesday night. Their bodies have been handed over to their respective relatives, who performed their last rites on Wednesday.

Scenes of grief prevailed at the victims' native places, as family members, relatives, and villagers broke down upon the arrival of the bodies. Officials who visited the bereaved families assured them of all possible support from the government.

Officials said the state government has taken special measures to ensure the bodies of the victims are transported to their native places. They reiterated the government’s commitment to extend all necessary assistance to the affected families.
