Tirupati slum dons new look with artistic murals

Maurya says her goal is to make Tirupati, the state’s religious hub, a smart, clean and beautiful city

Tirupati: The Scavengers Colony in the temple city has undergone a remarkable transformation in urban beautification and sanitation, thanks to an initiative led by Municipal Commissioner Narapureddy Maurya.

Once a neglected slum area plagued by issues like poor sanitation, the colony now boasts vibrant murals and artwork adorning its walls, significantly improving the area's appearance and breathing a new life into the community’s surroundings.

The initiative began after the municipal commissioner visited the colony and resolved to change the poor conditions there. Maurya decided to enhance the area not only by painting the walls with artistic designs but also by addressing some of the fundamental issues facing the residents.

Key issues such as an inadequate drainage system and irregular water supply were also prioritized for immediate action.

The transformation of what is also known as the Scavengers Colony has enthused many. Chief minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu and education minister Nara Lokesh have praised Maurya’s efforts. Naidu noted that this transformation was made possible through the Smart City and Swachh Survekshan initiatives, which aimed to promote cleanliness and urban development. He also advised other cities to draw inspiration from Tirupati's example.

Maurya says her goal is to make Tirupati, the state’s religious hub, a smart, clean and beautiful city. Similar beautification and sanitation projects are being carried out in other parts of the city as well.

“This initiative is part of the Tirupati Municipal Corporation’s broader aim to enhance the urban landscape and improve the quality of life for its residents. With cooperation from the public, we aim to achieve top rankings in the Swachh Survekshan survey and become an example of successful urban transformation,” the commissioner stated.
