Tirupati MP Urges Labour Minister to Address Contract Employees’ Concerns

Tirupati MP Dr Maddila Gurumurthy has urged the Union labour ministry to address the concerns of contract employees working in government medical colleges, hospitals, dental colleges and nursing colleges across Andhra Pradesh.

Gurumurthy, along with YSRC Lok Sabha floor leader Peddireddy Mithun Reddy, met Union labour and employment minister Mansukh Mandaviya in New Delhi on Monday and submitted a representation.

The MP said contract employees had been performing duties similar to those of regular employees for several years but continued to receive lower wages. He sought implementation of the principle of “Equal Pay for Equal Work” and appropriate service benefits for eligible employees.

Gurumurthy said Mandaviya informed them that the Union government was planning to introduce legislation on equal pay for equal work covering employees in both the government and private sectors.

He also raised concerns over employees working in essential healthcare services without adequate weekly days off and urged the ministry to ensure proper implementation of labour laws and provide weekly rest.

The MP brought to the minister’s notice cases of contract employees and supervisors who had completed more than 10 years of continuous service but were allegedly removed without prior notice or due process. He sought a review of such cases and appropriate action for the affected employees.

Gurumurthy further sought uniformity in wages, service benefits, job security and working conditions for contract employees. He also called for transparent, merit-based recruitment and equal opportunities for unemployed youth in line with Articles 14 and 16 of the Constitution.
