Tirupati District Records 20.63 Lakh Population In Census First Phase

The number of houses recorded during the exercise was higher than the estimated 7,06,055 houses based on the 2011 Census: Officials

TIRUPATI: The first phase of the Census in the Tirupati district has recorded 7,62,767 houses and a population of 20,63,043, according to preliminary figures released by officials.

The house listing and population enumeration exercise began on May 1 and concluded in the first week of June after the deadline was extended. Enumerators covered all 36 mandals, municipalities and municipal corporations in the district.

Officials said the number of houses recorded during the exercise was higher than the estimated 7,06,055 houses based on the 2011 Census. However, the population count was lower than the projected 22,17,515. The district's population was found to be around 1.54 lakh less than the estimate.

The survey identified 1,19,051 vacant houses and 2,577 locked houses across the district. Officials said a clearer picture of the district's population would emerge after the second phase of the Census, which is scheduled to be taken up in February next year.

Within Tirupati Municipal Corporation limits, the survey recorded 1,66,044 houses against an estimate of 1,08,016. The population was counted at 4,50,971, compared to the projected 5,71,055.

Officials said the house listing was completed in about 79 per cent of the corporation area. The survey also found 20,674 vacant houses and 193 locked houses within the city limits.

Meanwhile, the first phase of the Census did not cover the SHAR centre at Sriharikota in Sullurupeta because of security restrictions. Revenue Divisional Officer Devendra Reddy said nearly 3,000 people, including scientists, senior officials and security personnel working at the facility, would be covered during the second phase.

However, enumeration was carried out in the DRDL, DOS and KR Palem colonies where SHAR employees reside. Municipal officials said nearly 1,000 houses in these colonies were covered during the exercise. Officials said the second phase of the Census would provide a more comprehensive demographic profile of the Tirupati district.
